Install it
About 2 minutes. Do it on the phone.
- Download the file. Tap the button above. When it finishes, tap the file, or find it later in Files, under Downloads. Chrome may say the file might be harmful. Choose Download anyway. It says that about every app file from a website.
- Allow the install. Android asks once. You will see something like your phone isn't allowed to install unknown apps from this source. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, then press Back. The install carries on. The switch is for whichever app you downloaded with (Chrome or Files, say), and you can turn it off again afterward.
- Get past Play Protect. It may say App not recognized or Unsafe app blocked. That is expected for any app not from Play. Tap More details, then Install anyway.
- Open it. Wait a few seconds, then tap Open. The app shows up as 3DC Tasting Notes with the crest icon.
Why is something asking for my camera or microphone?
The app never asks for a permission itself. Google's own tools do, when you use a feature. Allow them (While using the app is fine).
| When you tap | What pops up | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Scan barcode | Google's barcode scanner (camera) | Allow the camera |
| Speak (the mic on notes) | Your phone's voice typing | Allow the microphone |
| Read Label / Add Photo | The system photo picker | Pick a photo. No permission needed. |
If you deny one by accident, tap the feature again and allow it.
What works where
- Scan barcode needs Google Play services, and internet the very first time (it fetches a small scanner component from Google, once). After that it works. Phones without Google Play (some Amazon and Huawei devices) cannot scan. Everything else still works.
- Dictation (the mic button on Nose, Flavor and Finish) uses the phone's built-in voice typing. Some phones use the internet to transcribe.
- Read Label reads the text from a photo of the label on the phone, offline.
- Everything else works offline: writing tastings, ratings, search, insights, export.
Back up your notebook
No cloud, no account. Your tastings live on the phone. Uninstall the app or lose the phone and they go with it, unless you made a backup.
- Settings › Auto-backup › Choose backup folder. A folder synced by Drive or Dropbox works.
- Settings › Export backup (JSON) saves a
3dc-backup.jsonfile you can keep in Drive or email to yourself. Settings › Import backup restores it, on a new phone for example. - Settings › Export CSV gives you a spreadsheet-friendly copy.
Getting updates
The app never connects to the internet, so it cannot tell you about a new version. Come back to this page now and then, or point Obtainium at the address above. A newer file installs over the old one and keeps your tastings.
If Android ever refuses an update, export a backup before you uninstall the old version.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| "App not installed" | You may already have a different copy installed. Uninstall it (export a backup first), then install again. |
| Can't tap the file, or nothing happens | Open the Files app, go to Downloads and tap the
.apk there. |
| "Blocked by Play Protect" with no "Install anyway" | Open Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Play Protect, then the Settings gear. Turn scanning off, install, then turn it back on. |
| Barcode scanner won't open | Check that the phone has the Google Play Store app, and that it is online for the first scan. |
| Dictation button does nothing | The phone may not have Google voice typing enabled. Set it up in Settings › System › Languages & input › On-screen keyboard › Voice typing. |
